بزرگ‌ترها دائم به بچه‌ها دروغ مي‌گويند و تصور مي‌كنند آنها متوجه دروغ‌هايشان نمي‌شوند. البته گاهي پدر و مادر ناچار هستند درباره موضوعاتي خاص به فرزندشان دروغ بگويند، ولي نكته مهم اين است كه هنگام گفتن اين دروغ‌ها بدانيم چرا حقيقت را از او مخفي مي‌كنيم و در چه مواردي اين كار را انجام مي‌دهيم؟
طبق نتايج ارائه شده در اين زمينه، پدر و مادر‌ها در دوران كودكي فرزندان به طور متوسط حدود 3000 دروغ مصلحتي به او مي‌گويند. البته جالب است بدانيد پدر و مادرها به هزاران دليل مختلف اين دروغ‌ها را به بچه‌ها مي‌گويند؛ دروغ مي‌گويند تا از فرزندشان در برابر خطرات دنياي واقعي محافظت كنند، دروغ مي‌گويند تا آسيبي به فرزندشان نرسد و خودشان و فرزندان حس بهتري داشته باشند.
اما گروهي از متخصصان اعتقاد دارند دروغ گفتن به بچه‌ها به هر دليلي اشتباه است؛ آنها به والدين توصيه مي‌كنند درباره همه موضوعات تا جايي كه ممكن است واقعيت را به كودك بگوييد.
شايد شما فكر مي‌كنيد كه هيچ وقت به فرزندتان دروغ نگفته‌ايد. اما اگر كمي بيشتر دقت كنيد حتماً مواردي پيدا خواهيد كرد؛ به‌عنوان مثال پدر و مادر هميشه در مطب دكتر و زماني كه كودك ترسيده و نگران است به او مي‌گويند آمپول زدن كودك آ‌نها را بيشتر اذيت مي‌كند. اما آيا اين واقعاً درست است؟ آيا آنها درد بيشتري از كودك تحمل مي‌كنند؟
درست است كه در چنين شرايطي از نظر روحي وضعيت خوبي نداريد، اما فكر نمي‌كنم واقعاً درد و ناراحتي شما با كودك قابل مقايسه باشد. پس بهتر است به جاي اين دروغ براحتي برايش توضيح دهيد كه شما نگران او هستيد، اما براي حفظ سلامتش بايد اين وضعيت را تحمل كنيد. يكي از بدترين دروغ‌هايي كه پدر و مادر مي‌توانند به فرزندشان بگويند اين است كه خود آنها هيچ وقت دروغ نگفته‌اند؛ اگر چنين چيزي به كودك بگوييد، روزي كه او كوچك‌ترين دروغي را از زبان شما بشنود، به تمام حرف‌هايتان شك مي‌كند. بنابراين بهترين كار اين است كه به كودك بياموزيد دروغ نگويد و خودتان هم تا مي‌توانيد به او راست بگوييد، حتي اگر راضي كردنش، كار سختي باشد.
